About This Blog

One of the things that makes Cookie's cartoon artwork so distinctive is the amount of detail hidden within it.

People often see the main joke or character first.

But look again.

There may be something happening in the background.

First paragraph

One of the questions I get asked most often about Baaad Flockers® is:

“How does Cookie come up with all these ideas?”

Having known Cookie for more than 20 years, I can tell you there is no simple formula.

There is, however, something that has never changed.

Cookie has an inner drive to compete with himself.

The next drawing has to be better than the last. The next character has to have something new about it. The next cartoon, painting or airbrush piece has to push things a little further.

It is not something he switches on and off.

It is simply part of who he is.

That drive has never really wavered.

A Cartoonist Who Sees the World Differently

Cookie often says that much of his creativity comes from the curiosity he had as a child.

He notices things.

Small things.

A phrase someone uses.

A funny expression.

The way somebody stands.

A tiny detail in a conversation.

Something happening across the room that most people would never pay attention to.

And then you see the signs.

Having known him for so long, I can usually tell when something has caught his attention. There is that look that says a phrase, moment or character has just lodged itself somewhere in his imagination.

It might not become a funny T-shirt design immediately.

It might sit there for weeks, months or even years.

But somewhere along the line, it may suddenly appear again as a sheep, fish, cow, dog, biker, swimmer or some completely unexpected Flocker character.

That is part of the magic behind Cookie's original hand-drawn artwork.

The Tiny Details You Might Never Notice

One of the things that makes Cookie's cartoon artwork so distinctive is the amount of detail hidden within it.

People often see the main joke or character first.

But look again.

There may be something happening in the background.

A sign.

A facial expression.

A tiny prop.

A piece of wording.

Or something deliberately unusual about the character itself.

Many of those details are missed completely.

And sometimes nobody ever asks why they are there.

For example...

Have you ever wondered why Cookie's fish character, Bob, has three hairs?

There is often a story, joke or thought behind even the smallest part of a drawing.

That is why detailed cartoon artwork can be so much fun to revisit. You can look at the same design several times and notice something different.

Listening Is Just as Important as Drawing

Creating successful cartoon T-shirt designs is not only about knowing how to draw.

Cookie listens.

He watches how people react.

And those reactions really matter.

Having spent years selling at Baaad Flockers shops, events and shows, Cookie has had something incredibly valuable that many artists never get — the opportunity to watch people discover his work in real time.

He can see which designs make somebody stop.

Which ones make them laugh.

Which characters people immediately identify with.

And which designs simply do not connect.

That feedback is taken seriously.

A drawing can have hours of work behind it and still be scrapped if the reaction is not right.

Because ultimately, the artwork has to communicate.

Knowing When a Cartoon Works

There is a moment when somebody spots a design and their face changes.

They smile.

They laugh.

They point it out to whoever they are with.

Sometimes they immediately say:

“That's you!”

Or:

“That's definitely Dad!”

And suddenly the artwork has done its job.

That is something Cookie understands extremely well.

After decades of creating humorous British cartoon artwork, he knows that a successful design is not just technically good.

It needs to make somebody feel something.

Recognition.

Belonging.

Nostalgia.

Humour.

Or simply the unexpected pleasure of seeing something that makes them laugh.

The Customer Becomes Part of the Creative Process

That is why the people who visit our shops, see us at shows or discover Baaad Flockers clothing and gifts online are actually part of the story.

Their reactions help shape what comes next.

Cookie may begin with the idea, but it is the response from real people that tells him whether the character has connected.

Some ideas become favourites.

Others evolve.

Some are redrawn.

And some never make it beyond the studio.

That willingness to keep changing and improving is another reason Cookie's original graphic T-shirt designs have continued to evolve over so many years.

The Next Drawing Is Always Waiting

Ask Cookie what his favourite drawing is and there is a good chance the answer will somehow involve the one he has not created yet.

Because the next idea is always there.

The next character.

The next phrase.

The next challenge.

That competitive streak is not about competing with another artist.

It is about looking at what he created yesterday and believing he can make something better tomorrow.

And after more than three decades of creating hand-drawn T-shirt artwork, cartoon characters and humorous illustrations, that curiosity still has not disappeared.

If anything, it seems to have become stronger.

That Is How the Flock Keeps Growing

So, how does Cookie come up with the ideas?

He watches.

He listens.

He remembers.

He questions.

He notices the things other people overlook.

Then he draws.

And redraws.

And sometimes starts all over again.

Most importantly, he understands that a cartoon is not really finished until somebody else connects with it.

Because behind every Baaad Flockers character, funny T-shirt and original piece of artwork is the same ambition:

Create something that communicates, connects and brings somebody a little bit of joy.

And then...

make the next one even better.

Keep the Laughter tanks full - Flockers!

We are often asked where the ideas come from for out t-shirt designs. The original sheep characters were created by Cookie in 1987, inspired by the tent trampling loud early morning bleating sheep of the Welsh mountains. Rather than a timid, human fearing species, their rebellious nature took Cookie;'s imagination a step further. ......
